United Methodist Women

UMW Purpose

“The organized unit of United Methodist Women shall be a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ; to develop a creative supportive fellowship; and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church.”

Our organization of Swansboro United Methodist Women (SUMW) has over 150 members who meet monthly for Christian fellowship, study and prayer. We meet in the following circles: one on the 3rd Monday at 7 p.m., one on the 2nd Wednesday at 10 a.m., one on the 2nd Wednesday at 4 p.m., three on the 2nd Wednesday at 7 p.m., and one on the 2nd Sunday at 12:30 p.m. The Sunday circle is especially for women born in the 60s, 70s and 80s.

Our general meetings include all women in all circles. The night general meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday evenings in January, May, September and November. The day general  meeting takes place on the second Wednesday of March immediately following the March day circle meeting. The January and May night general meetings are held in the JOY Classroom. In September the General Meeting will be a Fall Kick-off Salad Pot Luck. A combined dinner meeting, installation ceremony, and silent auction for all circles will be November 28 in our Fellowship Hall.

All women are invited to participate in UMW events including craft nights, book studies, movie nights, game nights, line dancing and cooking classes. Dates and times will be publicized on the web and in the church bulletin as well as through UMW circles.

You are invited to join our SUMW and share in this opportunity for service to missions and fellowship. If you haven't yet joined a circle, we’d love to introduce you to our SUMW. It's a wonderful way to make new friends and enjoy Christian fellowship.

Our theme for 2012 is “In God’s Mission We Are Sent Out to Continue.”

WOMEN'S DAY APART: The 2nd annual Women's Day Apart was held Saturday, September 17, 2011 from 9am-3pm at Bethlehem UMC. It was a chance to join other women for a day to renew friendships or make new ones, a day to rejuvenate your spirit in God's word, a day of laughter, singing, movement, a day of new beginnings. The theme this year was "Weave Us Together" as we seek peace and hope in the trials of life. Rev. Dr. Alice Kunka, Pastor of Christian Formation at First UMC, Cary, lead us through a day rich in Bible study, music, interaction and introspection.
ChowdaHeads provided a delicious lunch.

At the September 2011 meeting of the Lula Hatsell circle, Rev. Rachel Moser asked us to think about and identify our spiritual “kryptonite,” i.e. the thing(s) that keep us from being truly grateful. She gave each member a piece of kryptonite to take home and ponder.

For the August 2011 general meeting, our UMW hosted a salad supper "end of summer/fall kick-off" for all women of the church. It was a fun evening of reconnecting with old and new friends, lots of entertainment and of course, great food which UMW members provided. Bobbi Edge presented "A Methodist Woman Meets the Cross." Sue Redfearn, New Bern District UMW President, modified "A Businesswomen Meets the Cross," creating a skit most applicable to UMW. Bobbi Edge, as a busy UMW member, is rushing around tending to 'business' and misses her bus. In disgust, she sits down at the Bus Stop and notices a huge CROSS in her way. Her dialogue about her experiences with the CROSS, because of the CROSS, and as a result of the CROSS, makes for a very provocative listening for the audience. Sue and Bobbi are members of our Swansboro UMW.

At their July 2011 meeting, the Lula Hatsell Circle celebrated Women's History Month. Members learned about women who were important in the development of the UMW. Then each member lit a candle in celebration of a woman who has been important in her own development. Jean Eriksen, shown in the picture below, led the program. The apron is her grandmother’s and the quilt is also a handmade heirloom.

May 25, 2011 Wednesday, Night Circle General Membership Meeting
Are your cleaning products doing harm to your children? Do you know what you are putting on your face as makeup? Do you want your house to smell good? All women of the church were invited to learn about these "green issues" and more at this UMW Meeting.

The Lula Hatsell Circle held a celebration of Earth Day, April 2011, led by Naida Koraly at her home. Highlighting the theme, "Make Peace with Mother Earth," the group heard prayers, scripture, and other writings about respecting the earth, as well as practical suggestions about how to "do what you can" to care for the earth. Naida provided a delicious meal of "fresh and wild" foods, and circle members brought desserts made with local strawberries. Paxon Holz taught the group to identify the wildflowers she brought. Naida provided copies of the writings and gave everyone a reusable grocery bag. Naida closed the program with this prayer from an Anglican prayer book:

For food in a world where many walk in hunger
For friends in a world where many walk alone
For faith in a world where many walk in fear
We give you thanks O Lord.  Amen

Cookbook Information

SUMW's own cookbook entitled Collard Greens, Watermelons, and Miss Charlotte's Pie is available locally and across the nation. The cookbook was inspired by two of our Swansboro UMW members and, with the aid of many of the SUMW ladies, the first printing came to fruition in 1993. It is now in its sixth printing. The book is a compilation of the “tried and true” recipes of our SUMW, their spouses and friends. The book not only contains wonderful recipes but also has many interesting historical tidbits about the area. This widely acclaimed cookbook enables the SUMW to generously support missions and ministries in our church and community.

To Purchase Cookbooks:

Collard Greens, Watermelons, and Miss Charlotte's Pieis available at the church office, by mail (refer to the order form for details), at many local businesses, or by contacting Mary Weiss at 252.393.2637.
